Boys on bikes

This past weekend both Derek and Henry participated in a local bike race. Derek did a criterium race for his age group and ranking and Henry did the kid's race. I sat on the sidelines, cheered them on, ate snacks and gestated.

The start of the race. Henry has the British flag helmet with the red bike and is in the middle of the picture here.

Midway point of the race.

Finishing. Notice the guy at the end giving away cookies to all the participants. Derek was a bit sad that was not included in his race. Also notice Henry's bib number--he was so excited to have one "just like Dad."

Derek's race was actually right before Henry's. The entire time Henry was asking when his race would start. It was a long 45 minutes for him. Here Derek is in the front. (photo courtesy of Adam)
Here are both Derek and our friend Keith on a corner. (again--thanks Adam for the great shot) Keith is just to the left of Derek with the matching Mad City Velo jersey (the team they are both on). I'm always a bit nervous with these races since it's such a tight course. Inevitably there is a crash, but thankfully both Keith and Derek finished the race with functioning bikes and no blood. Thanks to all those who came out to watch. It was a fun time indeed. Can't wait until next year.

Strong work, boys! And sweet pics, Adam! Dang!

In the first picture, I love that Henry seems to be checking out the gear on the competition's bike, like, "Hey, is that a fixed gear?" ;)

Very cool! I love kid races - way to go Henry! I know next to nothing about bike racing, so you'll have to fill me in - Todd was saying it would be a loop course - how many laps did you go?
